Zoe Black is a British-American filmmaker who brings playful, tender stories to life through bold visual expression. Their short documentary GIRLY is a joyful exploration of queer femininity which is currently screening internationally at awards-qualifying festivals. Other directorial work includes several short films and music videos, including the video for Roshan Ruprai’s Bulletproof which was shown at Tate Modern.

Zoe’s directing has its origins in theatre, where they specialised in darkly comic plays such as Alannah Lewis’s West of Frances — a one-woman show about spitting on a nun’s grave. It premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe, where it garnered 5- and 4-star reviews. From puppetry to lavish pink sets, Zoe creates imaginative, illuminating work that invites audiences to see the world in new and exciting ways.

Zoe holds an MFA in Film & TV Production from the University of Southern California and a BA in English Literature from the University of Cambridge. As a nonbinary artist, they're passionate about delving into the queer experience of gender through the medium of film. Their work sheds light on the unspoken quirks of everyday life, blending humour and sensitivity.
